Sigiriya Rock Fortress

owering 200 metres above the surrounding plains, Sigiriya is arguably the most spectacular ancient site in Asia. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, this lion-paw gateway fortress features stunning frescoes, elaborate water gardens, and panoramic views that justify every one of the 1,200 steps. We recommend a pre-dawn departure to reach the summit at sunrise.

A moderate 45-minute hike through a forest sanctuary leads to a boulder-top viewpoint that has become one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed sunrise spots.
